Beyond Pandemic - with a focus on agriculture

Livestream in English

This is a cooperation event of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation New York and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Bavaria.

In this talk, we will discuss the origins of Covid-19 and pandemics in general, the developments of the last months with a focus on agriculture, as well as prognoses for solidarity. Our conversation will be based on the following questions:

– What are the structural causes of pandemics? What role do deforestation, industrial agriculture, and large-scale industrial animal farming play around the globe?

– Why have neoliberal states been unprepared for the Covid-19 pandemic?

– How can the development of the Covid-19 pandemic be assessed? What is the short- and long-term outlook?

– What is the impact of the pandemic on agriculture? How do states approach the agricultural industry? What are the impacts on the relations of production at the global level?

– What are we to make of the worldwide easing of lockdown measures? Germany’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic is widely considered to be one of the best national responses – is this true?

– Has there been any change in the popular political awareness? How could solidarity between people and in social movements be improved in times of pandemic?

Speaker:
Rob Wallace (USA), evolutionary epidemiologist with the Agroecology and Rural Economics Research Corps and author of several books, including Big Farms Make Big Flu (2016) shortly to be republished in Germany and of the forthcoming Dead Epidemiologists on the COVID-19 pandemic. He has consulted for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Moderation: George Rainov is a student of English and is involved in climate policy at the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation Bavaria.

  • The event will be conducted as a livestream and broadcast only in English. A video recording of the livestream will be uploaded to YouTube at a later date with German subtitles.
